I’ve asked myself that question more than once.
I’ve always loved painting on a larger scale. There’s a wonderful freedom that comes with a big canvas. The brushes become bigger, the gestures become broader, and suddenly there’s room for an idea to breathe. Even the palette changes. Instead of tiny dabs of colour, I’m squeezing out generous amounts of paint and mixing rich pools of colour, almost like thick icing, with an energy that’s impossible on a smaller surface. It’s one of the great pleasures of painting large.
Statement paintings allow me to lose myself in an idea. Weather can sweep across the sky, trees can stretch with confidence and the landscape begins to unfold in a way that simply isn’t possible on a smaller canvas. They’re bold in scale but still grounded in the quiet atmosphere that has always drawn me to the Australian landscape.
These original Australian landscape paintings are created to become more than a focal point. They bring presence, balance and a sense of stillness to a space, inviting you to live with them and discover something new each time you return.
And when one painting finally feels complete, I usually find myself standing in front of another blank canvas, smiling to myself and thinking…
I wonder what would happen if…?
