I wanted to paint that quiet moment when the storm has almost passed but the sky hasn’t quite settled. The darkness is still there, yet the first hints of warmth are beginning to return across the landscape. For me, it’s one of the most hopeful moments in nature, because everything feels as though it’s gently moving towards calm again.

I’ve never been interested in painting storms for their drama alone. What fascinates me is what comes afterwards. The slow return of light, the changing weather, and the feeling that the landscape is taking its first deep breath after holding it for so long.

For me, The Returning Light is a painting about resilience and renewal. It reminds me that even the heaviest skies eventually begin to change.
