The Scent of Eucalyptus

The Scent of Eucalyptus is an original Australian gum tree painting inspired by one of the things I love most about the Australian landscape, the unmistakable presence of eucalyptus.

There are some things about Australia that are difficult to explain until you’ve experienced them yourself. The scent of eucalyptus after rain, the shifting colours of gum leaves in changing light and the quiet movement of tall grasses beneath an open sky all become part of the memory of a place. That feeling stayed with me while I painted this work.

Rather than describing a particular landscape, The Scent of Eucalyptus is about atmosphere. The tall gum leaves rise against layers of luminous blue-green weather, allowing colour and light to become as important as the trees themselves. It is a painting that celebrates the quiet beauty of the Australian bush and the sense of peace that comes from spending time within it.
