The Hill Where Dreams Rest

The Hill Where Dreams Rest

Whispers in the Indigo Night and The Hill Where Dreams Rest by Lucinda Leveille are companion pieces that explore mood, memory, and the quiet beauty of the landscape under indigo skies. Both works belong to a series that invites the viewer into spaces that are at once familiar and dreamlike, where colour and light carry emotion and imagination as much as they describe the land.

The skies are a defining feature of these paintings. Rendered in deep, velvety indigo, they set a contemplative tone, evoking the transition from dusk into night. This particular shade of sky is not just a backdrop but an atmosphere—one that speaks of stillness, reflection, and the soft hush that descends as day gives way to evening. Across these indigo expanses drift clouds touched with white highlights, their edges glowing as though they are quietly holding on to the last traces of light. The contrast between the depth of the skies and the delicacy of the clouds creates a sense of balance—darkness softened by radiance, quietness lifted by a hint of movement.

Beneath these skies stretch softly bleached hills, their gentle contours painted in muted, earthy tones. They roll gently into the distance, carrying with them a feeling of openness and calm. Unlike the bold golds of harvest or the fiery colours of Autumn, these hills are subdued, allowing the drama of the skies above and the trees upon them to take centre stage. Their softness suggests a land that has been shaped by time, weather, and memory, a place both enduring and welcoming.

Atop the hills stand magenta trees, striking in their presence. Their colour is bold, almost dreamlike, glowing against the muted earth and the dark skies beyond. These trees act as anchors in the landscape, their luminous tones drawing the eye and offering a sense of focus amidst the vastness. The magenta foliage seems to carry a quiet energy—vivid but serene—bringing a touch of the surreal to otherwise tranquil scenes. They speak of imagination, of stories whispered through branches, and of dreams rooted deeply in the land.

Whispers in the Indigo Night conveys a mood of stillness infused with quiet mystery. Its composition suggests a place where the night is alive with secrets, where silence is not empty but full of soft, unseen presence. The glowing clouds and luminous trees feel almost like voices in the dusk, carrying whispers on the evening air.

The Hill Where Dreams Rest, on the other hand, carries a more reflective tone. Its softened hills and radiant trees evoke a sense of rest and peace, a place where the weight of the day is set down and imagination is free to wander. It suggests a landscape where memories linger and dreams find a home, grounded yet expansive.

Both works are finished with oak floating frames. The natural warmth of the oak provides a gentle counterpoint to the richness of the indigo skies and the vivid magentas of the trees. It frames the paintings without overpowering them, enhancing their colours while maintaining an elegant simplicity. The paint continues around the edges of the gallery-style stretched canvas, allowing the images to extend beyond their borders and giving the works a sense of completeness.
