Ghosts in the Moonlight I and II

Ghosts in the Moonlight I and II

Ghosts in The Moonlight I and II are a pair of stunning large statement paintings, framed in rich oak, they transport the viewer to a dreamlike realm where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. The dominant midnight blue hue of the painting serves as the canvas, upon which the ghost gums stand as ethereal sentinels.

The ghost gums, with their pale, almost otherworldly appearance, emerge starkly against the dark blue backdrop, as if illuminated by an invisible moon weaving an intricate tapestry of textures and details, imbuing each tree with a sense of vitality and depth. The ghost gums seem to stretch towards the heavens, their delicate branches like outstretched arms, beckoning the viewer to enter their mystical world.

The painting’s central theme is encapsulated in the poem, author unknown:

“Rock face, or blist’ring plain,
Tenacious toe-hold standing grand
In challenging terrain.

A trunk of white reflecting soul
which glows in moonlit night
First People’s awed, and Dreaming told —
A living spirit sign.”

The poem captures the essence of the ghost gums as living, breathing entities that hold deep spiritual significance. The trees’ ability to thrive in challenging terrain is a testament to their enduring spirit, which resonates deeply with the First People’s culture and the Dreaming tradition.

The painting and the poem converge in a dance of symbolism and metaphor, where the ghost gums become messengers of the Dreamtime, carrying secrets and stories from a world beyond our own. As the viewer’s gaze lingers on the piece, the boundary between the physical and the mystical begins to dissolve, and the ghost gums’ ethereal presence transports us to a realm of wonder and awe.

As we gaze upon the ghost gums, bathed in the soft radiance of the moon, we are reminded of the ancient stories and traditions that surround these majestic trees. The poem and the painting converge in a celebration of the enduring power of nature and the secrets that lie within the heart of the ghost gums.

Both paintings offer a glimpse into a world of mystery and wonder, a realm where the boundaries between reality and fantasy dissolve, and the viewer is drawn inexorably into the dreamlike landscape of the ghost gums.
