Welcome – this is a quieter space within the studio.

A place for the thoughts that sit behind the work, and the moments that don’t always make it onto the canvas.

The paintings themselves are often pared back – reduced to atmosphere, light and restraint. What sits here is something different. These are the reflections that gather around that process: decisions, shifts, small uncertainties, and the quiet realisations that shape what eventually resolves in paint.

Some of these notes are practical – colour, composition, balance, the push and pull between control and instinct. Others move more slowly, through memory, observation, and the way a landscape is felt rather than described.

Living on the edge of the Gold Coast hinterland, the weather is never far away. Storms build and pass within view, light shifts quickly, and the sky carries a constant sense of movement and weight. The land itself holds a different kind of presence – gum trees with long, weathered trunks, twisted and leaning, shaped over time. These elements sit quietly alongside one another. What finds its way into the work often begins there – in watching, and in stepping out into it. The bush, the air before and after rain, the tension in the horizon – all of it continues to inform the way the paintings unfold.

They aren’t instructions, and not quite explanations. They don’t aim to define the work or fix it in place. Instead, they trace its edges – a way of following how the work moves, changes, and occasionally reveals itself.

You’re welcome to spend time here. To read, to wander, to return.

Over time, these musings form a quiet counterpart to the paintings – if the work holds stillness and distance, this is where some of the thinking behind that stillness is allowed to surface.
